    An Ultra-Stable Referenced Interrogation System in the Deep Ultraviolet for a Mercury Optical Lattice Clock

    We have developed an ultra-stable source in the deep ultraviolet, suitable to fulfill the interrogation requirements of a future fully-operational lattice clock based on neutral mercury. At the core of the system is a Fabry-P\'erot cavity which is highly impervious to temperature and vibrational perturbations. The mirror substrate is made of fused silica in order to exploit the comparatively low thermal noise limits associated with this material. By stabilizing the frequency of a 1062.6 nm Yb-doped fiber laser to the cavity, and including an additional link to LNE-SYRTE's fountain primary frequency standards via an optical frequency comb, we produce a signal which is both stable at the 1E-15 level in fractional terms and referenced to primary frequency standards. The signal is subsequently amplified and frequency-doubled twice to produce several milliwatts of interrogation signal at 265.6 nm in the deep ultraviolet.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Higher order differentiation over finite fields with applications to generalising the cube attack

    Higher order differentiation was introduced in a cryptographic context by Lai. Several attacks can be viewed in the context of higher order differentiations, amongst them the cube attack of Dinur and Shamir and the AIDA attack of Vielhaber. All of the above have been developed for the binary case. We examine differentiation in larger fields, starting with the field GF(p) of integers modulo a prime p, and apply these techniques to generalising the cube attack to GF(p). The crucial difference is that now the degree in each variable can be higher than one, and our proposed attack will differentiate several times with respect to each variable (unlike the classical cube attack and its larger field version described by Dinur and Shamir, both of which differentiate at most once with respect to each variable). Connections to the Moebius/Reed Muller Transform over GF(p) are also examined. Finally we describe differentiation over finite fields GF(ps) with ps elements and show that it can be reduced to differentiation over GF(p), so a cube attack over GF(ps) would be equivalent to cube attacks over GF(p)

    In terms of sustainability, traditional disclosure does not provide the necessary information to all stakeholders, mainly addressing the company’s shareholders’ expectations. As a result, organisations need to disclose more non‐financial information, which implies social and environmental issues. Many organisations currently provide sustainability reports in addition to the annual management reports containing financial and economic data. Several studies have focused on adopting practices and tools in the sustainability area and their overlap with traditional managerial techniques and tools. Nevertheless, integration involves a harmonising process, compatibility and alignment between different management practices. This study aims to assess the impact that the inclusion of sustainable reporting practices in corporate management reports has on economic performance, and to support filling the gap in the specific literature by proposing an integrated reporting model achieved through a harmonising process, compatibility and alignment

    Ultrastable lasers based on vibration insensitive cavities

    We present two ultra-stable lasers based on two vibration insensitive cavity designs, one with vertical optical axis geometry, the other horizontal. Ultra-stable cavities are constructed with fused silica mirror substrates, shown to decrease the thermal noise limit, in order to improve the frequency stability over previous designs. Vibration sensitivity components measured are equal to or better than 1.5e-11 per m.s^-2 for each spatial direction, which shows significant improvement over previous studies. We have tested the very low dependence on the position of the cavity support points, in order to establish that our designs eliminate the need for fine tuning to achieve extremely low vibration sensitivity. Relative frequency measurements show that at least one of the stabilized lasers has a stability better than 5.6e-16 at 1 second, which is the best result obtained for this length of cavity.Comment: 8 pages 12 figure

    Improving the previously known best bound, we show that any recursively enumerable language can be generated with a non-returning parallel communicating (PC) grammar system having six context-free components. We also present a non-returning universal PC grammar system generating unary languages, that is, a system where not only the number of components, but also the number of productions and the number of nonterminals are limited by certain constants, and these size parameters do not depend on the generated language

    A Search for Variations of Fundamental Constants using Atomic Fountain Clocks

    Over five years we have compared the hyperfine frequencies of 133Cs and 87Rb atoms in their electronic ground state using several laser cooled 133Cs and 87Rb atomic fountains with an accuracy of ~10^{-15}. These measurements set a stringent upper bound to a possible fractional time variation of the ratio between the two frequencies : (d/dt)ln(nu_Rb/nu_Cs)=(0.2 +/- 7.0)*10^{-16} yr^{-1} (1 sigma uncertainty). The same limit applies to a possible variation of the quantity (mu_Rb/mu_Cs)*alpha^{-0.44}, which involves the ratio of nuclear magnetic moments and the fine structure constant.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table submitted to Phys.     Improved performance of non-thermal plasma reactor during decomposition of trichloroethylene: Optimization of the reactor geometry and introduction of catalytic electrode

    The decomposition of trichloroethylene ITCE) by non-thermal plasma was investigated in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor with a copper rod inner electrode and compared with a plasma-catalytic reactor. The particularity of the plasma-catalytic reactor is the inner electrode made of sintered metal fibers (SMF) coated by transition metal oxides. In order to optimize the geometry of the plasma reactor, the efficiency of TCE removal was compared for different discharge gap lengths in the range of 1-5 mm. Shorter gap lengths (1-3 mm) appear to be more advantageous with respect to TCE conversion. In this case TCE conversion varies between 67% and 100% for input energy densities in the range of 80-480 J/l, while for the 5 turn discharge gap the conversion was lower (53-97%) for similar values of the input energy. As a result of TICE oxidation carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were detected in the effluent gas. Their selectivity was rather low, in the range 14-24% for CO2 and 11-23% for CO, and was not influenced by the gap length. Several other chlorinated organic compounds were detected as reaction products. When using MnOx/SMF catalysts as the inner electrode of the DBD reactor, the TCE conversion was significantly enhanced, reaching similar to 95% at 150 J/l input energy. The selectivity to CO2 showed a major increase as compared to the case without catalysts, reaching 58% for input energies above 550 J/l. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
